So, you want to drive professionally. Where do you start? What’s required? How long will the training take? Where can you find a job after you have your license?
INFINIT-I makes taking your CDL training quick and easy. Our simple online training has helped thousands of drivers start careers across North America. Get started now, so you can get driving faster.
Decide which type of CDL and endorsements you’ll need.
Class A CDL covers any combination of vehicles with a weight rating over 26,001 pounds, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a weight rating of over 10,000 pounds. Think of over-the-road dry vans or tank trucks that have a tractor and trailer.
Class B CDL covers any single vehicle with a weight rating of over 26,001 pounds, or a vehicle towing a vehicle with a weight that doesn’t exceed 10,000 pounds. Think box trucks for regional and local deliveries, coaches, and school buses.
Endorsements are required for specialized transport, such as hauling Doubles and Triples (T), Passengers (P), Tanks (N), Hazardous Materials (H), and School Bus (S).
Next, you’ll have to get a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and hold it for a minimum of 14 days. Check your state’s Department of Public Safety or Department of Transportation for state-specific criteria for the CLP.
Much like a standard driver’s license learner’s permit, this will allow you to operate a commercial vehicle alongside a CDL holder. To get one, your driving record will be checked for the last 10 years, and you’ll be required to take a physical to get your DOT medical card.
Infinit-I’s ELDT theory training, which is required to get your CDL, is a great study tool to help prepare for your CLP exam. As an added bonus, it is also required by the FMCSA for new CDL holders. Finishing your ELDT theory as preparation for the CLP exam will kill two birds with one stone.
In order to secure your CDL, you must take the FMCSA-mandated CDL training—Entry Level Driver Training. As of February 7, 2022, the FMCSA requires new and upgraded CDL holders to complete ELDT (theory and behind-the-wheel) by an approved training provider.
INFINIT-I’s FMCSA-approved ELDT theory training has helped thousands of drivers obtain their CDL. It covers Class A, Class B, Passenger Endorsement, School Bus Endorsement, and HazMat Endorsement.
As an approved FMCSA provider of ELDT theory training, we also automatically submit your training records to the FMCSA, so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of critical paperwork.
After obtaining your CLP and completing your ELDT, you’ll need to pass all three parts of the Skills Test through your state agency. This includes the Vehicle Inspection Test, Basic Controls Test, and Road Test, which commonly consist of:
Once you’ve passed and your results have been processed, you should receive your CDL the same day or through the mail, depending on the state.
Now you can start job-hunting. Make sure you look for companies that care about driver well-being and safety.
In the United States, you must be 21 years old to drive interstate (across state lines) professionally. Many companies require a minimum of 2 years experience. If you’re a young driver, look for intrastate (within a state) driving jobs to start gaining experience..
You can also look at the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program for driving careers starting as young as 18. SDAP job opportunities.
