Last Year’s Stats – Brake Safety Week 2023

Number Of CMVs Placed Out Of Service During Brake Safety Week (2019-2023)

The graph above shows the number of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) placed out of service during Brake Safety Week from 2019 to 2023. The data highlights the significant number of vehicles found with brake-related violations, peaking in 2020 and 2022. The lower numbers in 2023 reflect ongoing efforts to address critical brake safety issues.

During the unannounced Brake Blitz in May of 2023, enforcement officials inspected 18,575 CMVs for brake-related violations. 12.6% of all vehicles inspected were placed out of service due to critical issues.

  • Inspections Conducted: 18,875 commercial motor vehicles were inspected across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
  • Out-of-Service Rate: 12.6% of vehicles (2,375 CMVs) were placed out of service due to brake-related violations, slightly lower than the previous year.
  • Top Brake-Related Violations:
    • Steering axle brake violations: 295 vehicles (12.4% of those placed out of service)
    • Stand-alone brake violations: 1,127 vehicles (47.5%)
    • Vehicles with defective brakes exceeding 20%: 1,394 vehicles (58.7%)

Additionally, brake lining and pad violations were a major focus this year. Violations related to lining/pad issues included:

  • Contaminated brake linings/pads: 40.03% of the total lining/pad violations
  • Cracked/voided brake linings/pads: 28.74%
  • Loose/missing brake linings/pads: 10.70%
  • Worn linings/pads: 20.53%

These inspections are part of the CVSA’s effort to improve road safety by addressing brake issues, which continue to be a leading cause of commercial vehicle violations (CVSA) (CVSA) (The BRAKE Report).

Safety First – Prepare for Inspection

Remind drivers to always perform pre- and post-trip inspections with caution. Just because the tractor-trailer is not in motion doesn’t mean its risk-free.

If possible, find a flat surface to park before the inspection. Experts suggest placing blocks or chocks around the drive tires for added stability.

Before Brake Safety Week, evaluate your fleet’s equipment with the following concerns.

  • How would a 12.6% fleet shutdown impact my company in terms of:
    • Operating Revenue
    • Mileage Loss
    • Breakdown/Hotel Pay
    • Maintenance costs
    • Fines/Citations
    • Vehicle Maintenance BASIC
  • Does your fleet know what to look for?
    • Chaffing or rubbing airlines
    • Hose diameter reduction due to wear
    • Damaged, missing, or broken components
    • Brake pad and lining measurements
    • Cracked or contaminated pads or lining
    • Excessive camshaft movement
    • Rust or cracks on drum due to inoperative brakes
    • Rust/holes in brake chamber
    • Audible air leaks in the emergency brake
    • How to measure the pushrod

If your fleet has not been properly trained and familiar with these procedures, you could be facing some serious downtime if they fail inspection.Safety First – Prepare for Inspection Infinit-I Workforce Solutions can help you.
